R2P, Stabilisation and The North-East

by nextierspd

On April 14, 2019, a few concerned individuals, groups and governments all over the world engaged in a sober reflection over the continued incarceration of over 100 Chibok schoolgirls in North-Eastern Nigeria.

This was on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the mass kidnap of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents. Slowly but steadily, the abduction and its concomitant trauma has faded from the minds of many. Though the Nigerian government had negotiated the release of some of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls and a few escaped or were set free by their abductors. Five years on, the whereabouts and fate of over 100 of the victims remain unknown.

Relying on the doctrine of responsibility to protect (R2P), and  stabilisation programme, this edition of Nextier SPD Weekly reflects on the continued incarceration of the Chibok schoolgirls, the role of the North East Development Commission(NEDC) in stabilising the region and makes recommendations on good practice for the agency.
