News Reports Tax Hike Protests in Kenya Killed at Least 39 People, Says Rights Watchdog by oaniunoh July 2, 2024 written by oaniunoh At least 39 people have been killed in recent anti-government protests in Kenya, says the national rights watchdog, as activists gear up for a new round of protests this week. The toll, announced on Monday by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), is almost double the figure previously disclosed by the government for those killed while demonstrating against a raft of unpopular tax increases that have now been withdrawn. KNCHR records indicate 39 people have died and 361 have been injured “in relation to the protests countrywide”, the state-funded body said in a statement, adding that the figures covered the period from June 18 to July 1. It added that there had been 32 cases of “enforced or involuntary disappearances” and 627 arrests of protesters. Largely peaceful anti-tax rallies – led by mostly young Gen-Z protesters – descended into shocking scenes of deadly violence last Tuesday when lawmakers passed the contentious legislation. After the vote was announced, crowds ransacked the parliament complex in central Nairobi and it was partly set ablaze as police fired live bullets at protesters. It is the most serious crisis to confront the government of President William Ruto since he took office in September 2022 following a deeply divisive election in a nation often considered a beacon of stability in a turbulent region. In a televised interview on Sunday, Ruto said that 19 people had died in the protests, but insisted that he did not have “blood on my hands” and pledged an investigation into the deaths. The KNCHR “continues to condemn in the strongest terms possible the unwarranted violence and force that was inflicted on protesters, medical personnel, lawyers, journalists and on safe spaces such as churches, medical emergency centres and ambulances,” the rights body said. “We maintain that the force used against the protesters was excessive and disproportionate.”The watchdog also said it “strongly condemns the violent and shocking acts of lawlessness that was exhibited by some of the protesters” including the parliament and other government buildings. Fresh protests have been called by activists starting from Tuesday despite Ruto announcing last week that he would not sign into law the bill containing the tax hikes. Leaflets have been posted on social media with the hashtags “Occupy Everywhere”, “Ruto must go” and “Reject Budgeted Corruption”. Kenya’s cash-strapped government had said previously that the tax increases were necessary to service the massive public debt of some 10 trillion shillings ($78bn), equal to roughly 70 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). The International Monetary Fund has urged the country to implement fiscal reforms in order to access crucial funding from the Washington, DC-based lender. Ruto had already rolled back some tax measures after the protests began, prompting the treasury to warn of a gaping budget shortfall of 200 billion shillings ($1.6bn). In Sunday’s interview, Ruto had warned that the government would have to borrow heavily following the decision to scrap the finance bill. Analysts say the president’s U-turn on the tax laws has left him severely weakened domestically with his administration divided in its response and his opponents rejuvenated. “Enslaved and supported by foreign interests, and never pro-people in its outlook and interests, [Ruto’s administration] was bound to face the consequences of its priorities,” Willy Mutunga, Kenya’s former chief justice, told Reuters news agency. “As long as the material interests of the youth are not addressed, the chasm grows bigger and bigger,” Mutunga said. Nextier Insights Palestinians Flee Khan Younis as Israeli Forces Strike South Gaza by oaniunoh July 2, 2024 written by oaniunoh Palestinians have been fleeing districts to the east of Gaza’s second city of Khan Younis after Israel issued evacuation orders. Overnight and into the morning, witnesses reported multiple Israeli strikes in and around Khan Younis. A medical source and the Palestinian Red Crescent said eight people had been killed and more than 30 wounded. Patients and medical staff have also been leaving the European Gaza hospital in the area, as the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza told them to evacuate. The Israeli military has not itself issued an evacuation order for the hospital. The Red Cross is reported to have helped patients in the process of transferring to another hospital. Louise Wateridge, an official with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) in Gaza, asked where people could go as they were forced to leave their homes once again. “In this area, people were already forced to survive in severely damaged, destroyed, structurally unsafe buildings after the Rafah military operation,” she said. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement on its latest operation in Gaza, saying it was responding to some 20 projectiles that were launched from the area of Khan Yunis towards Israel on Monday. “Overnight, the IDF struck terror targets in the area from which the projectiles were fired, including a weapons storage facility, operational centres and additional terrorist infrastructure sites,” it continued. The IDF said Hamas was continuing to “systematically violate international law while using civilian infrastructure and the civilian population as human shields”. The armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it had carried out the attack on Monday, the biggest barrage launched into Israel from Gaza for months. Much of Khan Younis was destroyed in a sustained Israeli offensive against Hamas earlier this year. The city to which some of its residents subsequently returned is almost unrecognizable. Nevertheless, many moved back to take refuge from Israel’s offensive in Rafah. Now, once again, many are on the move, fearing a major new assault. News Reports NAF Intercepts Bandits in Niger, Frees Rustled Cattle by oaniunoh July 2, 2024 written by oaniunoh The Nigerian Air Force said on Sunday that it intercepted a group of terrorists in Niger State and freed some cattle earlier rustled by the criminals. NAF said also destroyed several illegal oil refining sites in Rivers State and eliminated scores of terrorists in Niger State in recent coordinated air strikes. The Director, Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, AVM Edward Gabkwet, stated this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. He said following a tip-off, NAF swooped on terrorists hibernating at Dandunu after rustling cattle from communities around the Kuchi-Kapana axis in the Munya Local Government Area of Niger. Gabkwet said the NAF intercepted the terrorists on nine motorcycles leading the rustled cattle. According to him, the motorcycle-riding terrorists were struck by the aircraft in several passes with most of them eliminated in the process. “The feedback from locals around the location has so far been positive, with most of them being able to recover the rustled cattle and returning to their livelihoods,” he added.Gabkwet said as the activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs had become sophisticated, so had the NAF and other security agencies re-strategised to checkmate their activities and be ahead of their game. He said that the oil thieves had in most cases continued to find new ways of concealing their overhead tanks used in storing stolen crude oil products from burst pipelines in the Niger-Delta region. According to him, they also continued to infuse the use of fast speedboats to convey their stolen goods. Gabkwet said in response, NAF and other security agencies had upped their game with modern technology and hardware that enable them to detect and deter the activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs. “In Willcourt, a riverine settlement within the creeks of Niger Delta Region, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe sighted and destroyed three illegal refining sites.” “The site has a total number of seven overhead tanks concealed under thick mangrove vegetation. “Similarly, about five kilometres downstream, four boats were also sighted moving southwards with suspected illegally refined products. Our men attacked and destroyed the boats. “While heading back, the crew spotted a speedboat with five suspected oil thieves fleeing the area. “Upon sighting the aircraft, the criminals increased speed, hoping to evade the aircraft but the air component then pursued the speedboat until they arrived at the blocking zone of ground troops where they were arrested,” he said.
