There is an ongoing struggle for dominance between state forces and ethnic militias, criminal gangs, terrorist groups, human smugglers and other terror merchants. These non-state armed groups operate with relative impunity across the area which stretches from the Atlantic shores in West Africa to the Gulf of Aden, spanning the southern parts of the Sahara Desert. Though naturally endowed with significant deposits of gold, diamonds and uranium, the African Sahel receives limited rainfall resulting in harsh climatic conditions which shape the various conflicts.
