Tinubu Opens African Counterterrorism Summit

by eochogwu

President Bola Tinubu will declare open the African Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja today (Monday).

The event is organised by Nigeria, with support from the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and will hold from April 22 to April 23, 2024 with the theme: ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat of Terrorism’.

The Presidency announced that the summit aims to enhance multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation.

It also seeks to reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, announced this in a statement on Sunday titled ‘President Tinubu to Open Africa Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja.’

Ngelale noted that Monday summit would underscore the importance of African-led and African-owned solutions.

The summit will bring together participants from across Africa, including heads of state, government officials, representatives of international organisations, multilateral institutions, members of the diplomatic corps, and civil society groups, Ngelale said.

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed, will be in attendance.

The event will conclude on Tuesday with remarks from Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, Mr. Vladimir Voronkov.

The summit coincides with significant security challenges in Nigeria, primarily banditry and terrorism.
